Understanding & analysis of website statistics

If your webdesigner talks 'hits' run a mile
Understanding your website statistics

You are currently viewing 1 page on this website, in my statistics it will show up as 4 'hits' Every file, graphic, or photo equals '1 hit' . Then if you look at a few more pages on this site imagine how many 'hits' your 1 visit will show as.

Designers/developers should talk of website 'visitors', This also needs to be carefully looked at , it should be 'unique visitors' the closest term in being correct with website analysis statistics.

Without being 'unique' we have a scenario of someone bookmarking or putting in their 'favorites' a website they have visited, then everytime (with a certain setting) and without their knowledge their browser checks/collects a fresh page, mostly that setting is EVERY time they go online. Again the result - 'visitors' that aren't really visitors.

A further distinction includes the length of time of the website visit, many 'visits' are less than 30 seconds, not true visitors at all, these are generally email address robot harvesters or the collection of the fresh page.

Email address robot harvesters are automated and are searching for the @ sign in email addresses on web pages. The unfair way to have inflated "hits" in statistics is merely putting an email address on a webpage. Guaranteed to make a website look more visited.
